The First Annual Steve Smith Classic: Battle for the Crown is not just another high school basketball showcase — it’s a movement built on legacy, purpose, and community.
We’re honoring Coach Steve Smith, the legendary Oak Hill Academy coach who built one of the greatest dynasties in high school basketball history — producing more than 30 NBA players and hundreds of Division I athletes. Many of those players call Charlotte home, carrying his influence from the hardwood to the world stage.
What Makes Us Different
The Steve Smith Classic brings together national powerhouses, regional champions, and Charlotte’s elite — all under one roof — to officially tip off the North Carolina high school basketball season.
But while others just host games, we’re investing in the future. A portion of proceeds from this showcase directly supports Charlotte Area High School athletic funds, empowering inner-city programs and creating opportunities for student-athletes across Charlotte.
This showcase is Built Different — not just because of who’s playing, but because of why we’re playing.
A Legacy That Lives Here
From Jeff McInnis and Junior Burrough to Caleb Foster and BJ Mack, the Steve Smith Classic honors generations of Charlotte players shaped by Coach Smith’s vision — players who proved that greatness begins with guidance, discipline, and faith.
Now, the next generation steps onto that same foundation, representing the city, the culture, and the legacy of excellence that defines Charlotte basketball.
